Pottery/ Sculpture Classes

Sagger Firing, Ted Camp

Ted Camp  B-A
Thursdays 9:30 – 12:30

Sagger firing is a special way of low-firing (1300-1600 degrees) unglazed clay pieces, which are fumed inside special containers leaving serendipitous colored surface patterns. This process will not involve glazing. Pieces may be either wheel thrown or handbuilt and usually coated with a terra sigilatta slip that produces a shiny surface. Once bisqued, students will partially bury their pieces in wood shavings or sand while covering the exposed surfaces with a variety of colorants, steel wool, copper wire, and organic matter. The pieces will then be fired in either ceramic flower pots (sagger, and provided by the student) or within a wrapped shell of aluminum foil to produce a variety of colored affects. Includes 25 lbs of clay and firing.

Raku-Fire & Smoke, Ted Camp

Ted Camp   B-A
Thursdays 1:00-4:00

Raku has become a popular way of fast-firing clay work to about 1860 degrees. Students will produce either handbuilt or wheel thrown work and apply special glazes to their bisque-fired work PRIOR to each class. During class, those pieces will be fired quickly and students will participate in removing their work from the hot kiln while the glazes are still molten. They will then place their work into smoking chambers where the glazes will develop a variety of surface and colored effects while cooling. Students will be exposed to regular and “naked” raku, obvara, and horse-hair techniques as choices for their surface patterns. Class fee includes 25 lbs of clay, glazes, and all firing.

Working With Glaze Chemicals, Ted Camp

Ted Camp   I-A
Thursdays 9:30 – 12:30

This course explores the chemical constituents of glazes in non-technical ways & would interest any student who is interested in making their own glazes. Knowing what a chemical contributes to the glaze formula is critical in choosing chemicals that provide the surface or color a student is looking for. Another important area of concern for students making functional glazes is that the glaze needs to be food-safe and durable in its use. Students will receive a special computer glaze calculator, which will help them to see when a glaze is properly fluxed to produce a durable surface and will help them to know what it will look like before the glaze is made. Students will make their own glazes and adjust them to produce desired results on test tiles. Time will be spent applying test glazes to test tiles, and not constructing work. No clay will be provided.

Friday Night Raku Fun, Seth Barendse

Seth Barendse B-A
Fridays 6:00-9:00

The Japanese word Raku literally translated=Enjoyment! So come and enjoy Raku with me! Glazing Raku pieces can be different from most other firing types, so I’ll start with a quick overview of glazes and how to use negative space as a design element. Once we have enough pieces glazed, we’ll start the first firing, continue until 9pm or all of the pieces are fired! There are attire restrictions that will be strictly enforced for safety: long pants made of a material that will not melt (no polyester or nylon), and closed toed shoes. I reserve the right to refuse to fire any pieces that I deem unsafe to tong. Must bring bisque-ware & at least 1 glazed piece is preferred.
