This course is all about oils. Students are welcome to bring works in progress for supervised studio time. Those new to oils will (time permitting) learn useful techniques of canvas preparation, color theory, composition, choice of brushes, paints and other tools. Intermediate artists will learn about techniques such as fat over lean, alla prima, dry brush, imprimatura, glazes, grisaille, sfumato, sgraffito, scumble, verdura, chiaroscuro, tenebrism, rebatement, the golden mean, notan, oiling out and others. More experienced artists will get a chance to incorporate these techniques and others.

This is an Intermediate class for those who have worked with pastels for a while and are familiar with drawing, the elements of composition, and how and when to use hard and soft pastels. Students will work from their own photo references and perfect the techniques of simplifying, establishing the focal point, and using only the pastels and marks that are needed to tell the story. Explore a variety of approaches in pastel with emphasis on structure, stroke, and pressure in limited palettes applied in layers to create delicate and luminous surfaces.

We will review color mixing, composition, under-painting, and paint application techniques. Students will work to develop a personal painting style to interpret an original acrylic art subject. The trick to painting Spanish Moss is to use many different values and hues to represent it. You will learn how to enhance the lighting in a landscape to bring out the airy qualities of the moss. You will paint the under painting first to prepare for painting the moss over it.

What makes trees look really natural is how the trunks and branches are rendered. How they overlap, and cast shadows onto each others branches adds dimension. Then add the foliage. It’s important to bring your sketch book and graphite pencils because you will first draw various trunk and branch examples. Then you’ll paint in your medium 2 types of trees during the first 2 classes. The last 2 weeks you will paint trees from your own photo references.
