This is class-led, hands-on, and open to anyone who can center and pull a cylinder. Each week one of the participants will present a demonstration, challenge, or problem to work on. This can be based on an area of your expertise, something that interests you in clay, or a new technique to try together. You can present a problem to work on, such as lids, feet, handles, height. The focus can be on soft work, leather hard, or bisque. Sandra Symens will kick off the first class. There’s a lot of expertise and experience between us so let’s share. Class includes 25# of clay with a bisque and glaze firing.

Jewelry Sandcasting, Donna Carrion

Sand casting is a technique that has been used since the earliest days of humanity. It is a fun technique you can use to create duplicate items in a short time. You can cast items from nature or bring in jewelry you have previously created to produce replicas. After finishing, your castings will be ready to be used in your own jewelry designs or small sculptures. Bring in your silver scrap to recycle. Please print your supply list. For safety, closes toe shoes are required. Supply Kit fee of $20 payable to instructor 1st class.

No experience required! If you’ve never thrown on a wheel or if it’s been a while, come and join us to learn, discover & explore your skills. Each week will feature new forms and/or techniques, including glazing. Come as you are-or bring a friend. Open yourself to the joys of creating and developing new strengths. Please bring pottery tools or plan to purchase them from the gift shop. Class fee includes 25# of stoneware clay, as well as bisque and glaze firings.

Raku – Smoke and Fire, Ted Camp

Because of the extended length of this course, both coil and slab construction techniques will be presented. Using coils as a design element within the wall structure of the form allows for very unique and tactile constructions. Slab construction allows for a more rapid building process with a greater emphasis on surface design and larger scale pieces. Demonstrations will focus on the making of quality utilitarian or sculptural objects. Students will be introduced to numerous glazing techniques that allow them to fully explore colors and effects possible with mid-fire (cone 6 electric) and hi-fire (cone 10 reduction) glazes. Bring your own tools or purchase a beginner’s kit at the front desk. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay, firing, and in-studio glazing.

Playing & Exploring with Watercolor, Helen Solomon

Enjoy an afternoon of experimentation and fun while you learn the fundamentals of playing and exploring with watercolors. You will learn the basic techniques all watercolorists use in every painting they do. How to mix and blend colors, how to create a palette, blend colors on the paper using various methods, and how to control the opacity of the paint. You can expect plenty of individual attention step-by-step through the entire painting process. The instructor provides references.

Mastering Watercolor, Helen Solomon

The class will introduce students to watercolor paint and a variety of traditional techniques including gradient washes, edge blending, masking, and transparent layering. Other techniques such as pouring, salting, resist techniques, and using layering mediums will also be discussed. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, students will begin to learn how the relationship between the quantity of water, the type of paper, and the pigments used will inform the painted surface. All references are from photographs.
