Sagger Firing

Ted Camp   B-A
Thursdays 9:30 – 12:30

Sagger firing is a special way of low-firing (1600 degrees) clay pieces which fume inside clay containers leaving a serendipitous surface
pattern. This process will not involve glazing. Pieces may be wheel thrown or handbuilds and usually coated with a terra sigilatta slip that produces a shiny surface. When bisqued, students will partially bury their pieces in sawdust and/or sand while covering their pieces with a variety of colorants, steel wool, copper wire, and organic matter. Pieces will either be fired in a commercial flower pots (student provided) or within a wrapped shell of aluminum foil. A variety of colored patterns will develop. Includes 25 lbs of clay and firing.

Raku Excitement

Ted Camp   B-A
Thursdays 1:00 – 4:00

Raku has become a popular way of fast-firing to about 1860 degrees. Students will produce work by handbuilding or wheel throwing and will
apply glazes to their bisqueware PRIOR to each class. During class, those pieces will be fired and students will participate in removing their work
from the kiln while the glazes are molten, placing them into smoking chambers where the glazes will develop a variety of surface and colored effects. Students will be exposed to regular and naked raku, obvara, and horse-hair as choices for their surface patterns.

Developing Safe Glazes

Ted Camp   B-A
Thursdays 9:30 – 12:30

This course explores the chemical constituents of glazes in as non-technical way as possible. Knowing what a chemical contributes to the glaze formula is critical in choosing chemicals that provide the surface or color a student is looking for. Another important area of concern is that a glaze needs to be food-safe and durable in its use. Students will receive a special computer glaze calculator that does all the math, which will show them when a glaze is properly fluxed creating durability and they will know what the glaze will look like before there glaze is fired. Students will make glazes and adjust them to produce desired results including the elimination of crazing and/or running.
