Learn the technique of watercolor painting on any type of ephemera like pages from old books, sheet music and maps. Several line drawings will be available from which to choose, or you can design an image based on the particular background paper you have chosen. We will distress the pages using several interesting techniques and then commence with our painting. These make great gifts for bibliophiles, boating friends or for the musically inclined. Or just make them for yourself!

When was the last time you really painted bold and loose?. Florida skies lend themselves to let go and create dramatic scenes. You will follow along with the instructor and practice on ¼ sheets for technique and then paint on a ½ sheet. You will be using large brushes and a simple color palette.

This process is about painting less and adding pen and ink lines to define and complete your image. It also is about not being precise with either medium so that the results will be loose and fresh in watercolor swatches and ink lines. The first day, you will create 2 samples using this process. Thereafter, you can use your photo references to be inspired by.

What really says that you’re in the tropics are palm trees and tall grasses. And yet the way that light illuminates them is so different. So you will learn that there are a variety of colors and placement of shadows that are unique to palm trees. You will also learn how to paint natural tall grasses which are very similar in approach as palm trees.

Underpainting with a single color in water-soluble oil paints makes a great base for color drawing. Quickly establish values and unify the color scheme. Arches oil paper works with both oil paint and colored pencils. Paint and paper provided, brushes and pencil sets available for use in class. Choice of subject with color reference. If you bring your own reference, be sure it has strong values and bring a black and white photocopy (8.5×11’).

Paint these vibrant yellow and purple orchids with a soft foliage background using a limited palette. Learn the techniques to achieve delicate flower petals with shaded colors. The background will be realized using two washes with masked details and negative painting to result in this soft foliage effect. This class is designed to teach the benefit of using gouache, considered an opaque watercolor, with transparent watercolors. The techniques are used to highlight, correct, and soften your watercolor paintings. Use it to create realistic feathers on birds, easily blend backgrounds, paint interesting foliage and any other number of uses. Gouache, pronounced “gwash”, is easily lifted and reworked even after several weeks without scrubbing.
