Experimental Water Media, Libit Jones

Libit Jones B-A
Wednesdays 1:00 – 3:30

The number one requirement for this class is to leave all fear and negativity outside the classroom. This is time to play, to explore and create with abandonment.

The Awe & Wonder of Yupo: It’s hard to believe that I once disliked yupo as much as I love it now. We are talking about pouring, slapping, dripping and using homemade brushes on yupo. Be sure to make room in your trunk for wet yupo to travel. Exploring Mark Making on Stretched Canvas: We will sponge paint on, drag feathers and other things in and through the paint, scrape and scratch with many things and stamp in non conventional ways. Three classes in which to catch up or continue to play with minimal supervision. MASK REQUIRED

Watercolors from A to Z: Workshop with Sterling Edwards

Watercolors from A to Z     B-A
Sterling Edwards, TWSA, CSPWC, WPA, NWS
Tuesday through Friday 9:00-4:00

This is a watercolor workshop for all skill levels, however, previous watercolor and drawing experience is very beneficial to gain the most from this workshop. There will be a wide variety of watercolor techniques that will be discussed and demonstrated including positive and negative painting, composition, using creative colors, glazing, charging color, and many more. We will begin each day with a demonstration painting that will be finished before lunch. The daily demonstration will be different each day so that you will see a wide variety of subject matter and styles including landscapes, floral, stylized, and abstract. My preferred method of painting is to use large brushes for most of the painting and complete the painting with a small amount of detail towards the end using smaller brushes. The end result is a watercolor painting that is loose and fresh with expressive brushwork. Following lunch, each student will have the afternoon to work on their own painting with assistance when needed. There are no requirements as to what subject the student paints or what size they prefer to paint.

One of the main objectives that I have as a teacher is to go beyond merely teaching watercolor technique. I make every effort to encourage the student to be creative with design and color in their painting. All of the techniques that I teach work equally well with either transparent or opaque watercolor. It’s what the student does with the techniques that will truly distinguish the artist. The workshop will have a laid back and sometimes humorous atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable to ask questions or request assistance with their painting. I often offer one-on-one help in the afternoons for those who need additional assistance. My workshops are designed to be fun, very educational, and inspiring.

Blue Ribbon Watercolor, Libit Jones

Libit Jones I-A
Wednesdays 9:30 – 12:00

Wondering why your painting is not being selected for the show or if it gets in it is not winning an award. This class doesn’t promise a blue ribbon the next show but will help guide you to getting there. Class begins with group critique. This often leads to further discussion on composition, what are judges looking for, color and more. After critique the instructor will meet with each student to give individual guidance for their artistic journey. This is not a project driven class. Each artist has their own paintings they are working on. MASK REQUIRED

Vibrant Watercolor Workshop, Soon Warren, NWS, AWS

Soon Y. Warren  B-A
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00-4:00
March 10, 11, 12

In this workshop, you will learn how to create certain images, such as a cut crystal bowl with floral or fruits, a Koi pond, an animal, in watercolor in a step by step process. The images will be chosen by the workshop coordinators.  The step by step images and text will be provided from Soon Young Warren for the guidance of all levels. To speed up the class exercise, Soon Y Warren will provide a digital reference photo, drawing, and step by step images for the group exercise. Following a painting demonstration of each step by Soon Young, participants paint step by step in order to fully understand and experience the process. While concentrating on technique, the concept of color theory, composition, and color values will be incorporated into the workshop. The workshop will have main subject and second subject as a filler project to complete the full workshop.

While painting, workshop participants will learn:

  • Glazing and washing techniques to create a luminous under painting
  • How to utilize light and dark values in order to capture the sparkle of crystal, smooth background wash, or pouring background
  • How to approach a painting
  • How to incorporate the concept of color theory and color relationships into a painting
  • Discussion and critiques will follow during workshop session
  • In addition to the group exercise, participants are encouraged to bring current pieces to paint along with reference photos. To make the most of instructional time, prepare the drawing before the workshop.
  • Second project would involve a different subject with different approach and technique, such as a pouring process for creating background before the subject or keep the paper white as is.
  • Bring own original painting to work on in your free time during or after. It may be a good exercise to work with similar color scheme and technique.
