Raku – Fire & Smoke, Ted Camp
Ted Camp B-A
Thursdays 9:00-12:00
Raku’s history goes back 600 years in Japan. Once revealed in the United States, it has become a popular way of fast-firing to a temperature around 1860 degrees. Using previously developed construction skills, students will produce either handbuilt or wheel thrown work and apply special glazes to their bisque-fired work PRIOR to each class. In addition to regular raku glazing, students are encouraged to try naked raku, obvara, and horse-hair techniques as alternative choices to glazing for their surface patterns. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, and all firing.

Raku – Fire & Smoke, Ted Camp
Ted Camp B-A
Thursdays 9:00-12:00
Using previously developed construction skills, students will produce either handbuilt or wheel thrown work and apply special glazes to their bisque-fired work PRIOR to each class. During class, those pieces will be fired quickly and students will then remove their work from the hot kiln while the glazes are still molten. They will then place their work into smoking chambers where the glazes will develop a serendipitous variety of surface and colored effects unique only to raku while rapidly cooling. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, and all firing.

Working With Glaze Chemicals, Ted Camp
Ted Camp A
Thursdays 1:00-4:00
This course explores the chemical constituents of glazes in non-technical ways and would interest any student who is interested in making their own glazes. Knowing what a chemical contributes to the glaze formula is critical in choosing chemicals that provide the surface or color a student is looking for. Another important area of concern for students making functional glazes is that the glaze needs to be food-safe and durable in its use. Students will test their own glazes (for cone 6 electric or cone 10 reduction) and adjust them to produce desired results on test tiles. Time will be spent applying test glazes to test tiles, and not constructing work.
