Creative Combination Watercolor & Acrylic Workshop with Dan Wiemer
Creative Combination Watercolor & Acrylic
Workshop with Dan Wiemer I-A
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
March 10, 11, 12, 10:00-4:00
Good painters are first good designers. Learn concepts that allow you to find strong abstract shapes in your scenes. We will learn about the different types of contrasts and how they add drama to your painting. The workshop will focus on painting like a printmaker – finding and constructing negative shapes to create mosaic-like paintings using watercolor and acrylic paints. Your learning experience will include demos, guided painting, self-exploration, and a bunch of fun.

Creative Mark Making Workshop, Kerry Didday
Kerry Didday
Thursday 10:00-4:00
Based on Steven Aimone’s book, Expressive Drawing, this workshop will guide students through a freeform and abstract approach to their work. This style emphasizes line and mark, rather than rendering a specific object, which for many people can create barriers to self-expression. Exercises start off simple and quick, encouraging students to work on instinct and feeling, while later ones focus on detail and refinement. The instructor will cover the elements basic to all drawing: line, mark, shape, texture and tone, then lead you through play and build exercises that allow you to explore these elements first-hand and produce richly satisfying pieces.
Each student will work on their own four separate 36″ x 36″ gessoed canvas with a variety of monochromatic media. Instructor will provide materials. $50 supply fee.

Romance of Oils, Martin Dunn
Martin Dunn B-A
Wednesdays 6:00-9:00
This course is all about oils, from beginning to advanced. Attendees are welcome to bring works in progress for supervised studio time. Those new to oils will (time permitting) learn useful techniques of canvas preparation, color theory, composition, choice of brushes, paints and other tools.
Intermediate artists will learn about techniques such as fat over lean, alla prima, dry brush, imprimatura, glazes, grisaille, sfumato, sgraffito, scumble, verdura, chiaroscuro, tenebrism, rebatement, the golden mean, notan, oiling out and others. More experienced artists will get a chance to incorporate these techniques and others in their work.
Finally, we have the wealth of knowledge passed down to us by our predecessors; some useful, some just entertaining. Gainsborough, for example, used heads of broccoli as models for trees. Kandinsky, who is credited with the first abstract art, was synesthetic. As in, he could hear colors :0. The monotony of life, as expressed by great artists, and all available to us! Let’s let them teach us.

Color Sense Workshop with Linda Richichi
Color Sense Workshop with Linda Richichi B-I
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
Feb 27, 28, Mar 1, 10:00-4:00
Finally, tactical training that will help you stop fearing color and start embracing it instead
— so you can create art with confidence, freedom, and fun! Learn the fundamentals of color in a way you’ve never been taught before…and become an artist who not only knows, but TRUSTS that they can create, mix, (and fix!) any colors they wish. Of all the technical aspects you’ve been exploring, such as line, tone, shape, and space, the biggest stumbling block has been color. But when you actually begin to work with color and try to create the colors you need…You can’t ever seem to get it right. The gorgeous, lush colors you see in your mind look off after mixing your own. The shades and tones you’re hoping for seem complicated and illusive to match. And the worst is, when for all of your mixing, the best you keep getting is MUD! It’s not your fault that mixing colors is tough (and it’s no sign of your artistic ability)!
The truth is you haven’t been taught enough about color to realize that you CAN be in control of it — and exactly how to do it. When you really learn the fundamentals of color and have a firm grasp on how it works, you’ll be able to create, control, and paint color in an entirely new way – and watch your paintings come to life as you’ve always hoped they would. So if you’re ready to learn about color in a way you’ve never learned before, Linda Richichi can’t wait to teach you how.

Palette Knife Possibilites, Dawn Gerardot
Dawn Gerardot
Thursdays 1:00-3:30
We will be using a “tree“ theme, so you might want to find a few pictures for ideas. We will design & create beautiful texture as we go. It is very easy and very calming. If you are new to this medium, it is truly forgiving. Making changes is so easy as well. My motto is “There are no mistakes”
After using a large brush to layer and color the white of the canvas, you will then only use palette knives to layer, texture and complete your composition. The class will emphasize how to select the right tool for the right area, how to hold your tools for maximum build and how to paint from back to front.
