Dry stick, Conté crayon, and pencil pastels form an aesthetic and technical bridge between drawing and painting.
Edgar Degas took his pastel work very seriously. Leonardo da Vinci used black and red chalk with yellow pastel highlights. Other pastel painters include Edouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassatt and Odilon Redon.
The goal of this class is to introduce pastels and the many ways they can be used. Each student will develop their own style, no matter the subject, still life, landscape, seascape, figure or portrait.
For the first half hour of each class we will critique work created the week before. As a group we will discuss each other’s artwork. This is a great time to talk about you, the artist and briefly discuss your next step. This is also a great time to observe each other’s work and maybe even pick-up something new that a fellow student might have suggested.
