The Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society was formed in 1983 and has more than 200 members, many of whom have achieved statewide and national recognition for their works; it serves members who live along the Florida Gulf coast.
Celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2013
Juror’s Statement:
It was indeed both a pleasure and an honor to judge this exhibition. Many outstanding images did not get the nod, only because there was a limitation on the number of awards offered.
I was looking for diversity, not only in size, but in the treatment of the subject …along with an extra bounce of creativity… making the image memorable.
It was important to offer surprises, not only in treatment but also in the choice of presentation…the direct look and almost eye contact of the subject staring out at you, the startling white snow surrounding the folks on skis and the melting ice chilling the yet to be opened bottles for libation. And then the mysterious and suggested eyes of the turban wrapped woman. These images stay with you long after leaving the Art Center Manatee.
I feel the strong use of color and clarity of design makes this a show that reflects well on the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society.
You have an impressive exhibition and I thank you for asking me to be a part of award process.
All the best!

ArtCenter Manatee presents the 9th Annual “Paint the Town” exhibition in the Reid-Hodges Gallery. The kick off for the show is “Quick Draw” , open to all artists, at the Farmer’s Market on Main Street Saturday, March 30th from 10AM – 2 PM. The main event, Paint The Town, takes place March 30 – April 4, during which time chosen professional artists will be painting on location ‘en plein air’ from actual Downtown Bradenton scenes. The finished paintings will be judged for prizes and displayed at ArtCenter Manatee April 4-May 3.
ArtCenter Manatee presents an exhibition of work from the Easter Seals Art Initiative Program in the Searle Gallery. The Art Initiative Program was developed in 2002 at Easter Seals Southwest Florida for our Adult Day Training participants and for the students in our alternative high school program, the VIP Academy. Since that time, several artists with disabilities have developed their innate skills and talents with guidance from our Art Instructor and Ringling College graduate, Karen Davenport.
Arnetta is in her late forties and was born with quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, which prevents her from walking and limits the movement of her feet and hands. Despite her disability, Arnetta demonstrates amazing control and dexterity with tools that she chooses to create her art: sticks for her dot work, paintbrushes, pastels, colored pencils etc. She loves colorful paintings and personally selects her own unique subject matter and medium. Arnetta is a prolific painter and her art sales help to supplement her limited income. She is most often wearing a big smile while sporting her favorite attire: anything leopard print! During her time in the Art Initiative, she has truly blossomed, not only as an artist and but as a more confident, self-assured woman.

Juror Statement
This was an exciting and challenging show to judge because of the level of craftsmanship, presentation and original ideas. The larger pieces demanded to be seen and the smaller ones asked to be heard. All of the work, individually, asks to be quietly absorbed.
