Each session is designed to give you a new perspective in painting in watercolors so that you can develop your own artistic style. Demonstrations are given in the 1st class while the students paint along. The students then apply what they’ve learned to create a painting from their photo references of that technique or subject.

The Beauty Of Watercolor

Watercolor Plein Air

A class for those students who love to experiment with different materials and techniques. We will see what happens with YUPO paper and liquid acrylics and watercolors. In these classes you can work with yupo, liquid acrylics, oriental papers, dye, and materials that texturize Arches watercolor paper. Be sure to get supply list.

Tea Trees

Students will splatter and run instant tea, in place of paint, to create foliage of leaves and ground cover and then finish with watercolor paint to make trees and branches. We will work on watercolor paper in a fun wet-on-wet technique. Wear an apron-we will get messy!

Painting Exciting Watercolor
With Limited Palettes

Pat will explore & excite with limited palettes. She will teach you how to paint with 2, no more than 5, colors in any one painting. You will learn how to mix beautiful grays to enhance your paintings & a simplified approach to drawing, using a template for design & composition. She will teach the importance of understanding & use of analogous color, establishing the temperature of a painting before painting the subject. Pat has an impressionist approach to painting, teaching direct painting (alla prima) with drawing. The use of titanium white casein mixed with transparent watercolor in painting animals. Please bring plenty of photo reference material. It’s helpful to organize photos into categories & file them in a box. Any subject may be painted in this workshop, such as landscapes, florals, animals, people, etc.

The Joy of Watercolor

Watercolor painting is relaxing, enjoyable and rewarding. Our approach to success is through demonstration and individual guidance, using a limited palette for a better understanding of mixing colors. More experienced students may work from their own images, but, otherwise, color and B&W handouts will be available. We will teach traditional drybrush, wet-on-dry and wet-on-wet techniques along with pouring wet-on-wet. There will be a set of guided exercises for beginning students.

Realistic Watercolor Portraits

Learn to create stunning realistic watercolor portraits and figurative paintings from photographic reference. Learn to paint translucent flesh tones, gradient background washes, detailed facial features and controlled applications of paint. Explore proper techniques for stretching your paper to achieve a pristine surface, while also learning tips and tricks of modern watercolor practices. We will work through monotone washes, water manipulation, work wet into wet, and explore opaque watercolor modeling. You will also learn to build form and dimension into your watercolor with using Jenny’s dry-brush technique. In addition, this course of instruction will also include how to take good photographic reference shots, lighting and posing your subject by learning elements of dynamic lighting, composition and mood in order to create your own masterpiece!
