All media including: pastel, oil, watercolor and acrylic. During a 4-week session, the student will create 4 small artworks, one per week, in the medium of their choice. Exploring more in-depth of a single subject matter, the student will learn how to mix a new color palette each week. They will get a deeper understanding of how variations of elements such as seasonal changes, dramatic lighting, color of the objects, etc. effect color mixing and placement throughout an artwork. Class size limited to 14 for more instructor feedback.

Fresh & Exciting Watercolors Workshop with John Lovett

In this 2019 watercolor and mixed media art workshop with John Lovett, you’ll explore not only traditional watercolor techniques but also a combination of different methods and materials including ink, gesso, gouache, acrylic and charcoal to free up your work and squeeze more out of your subject. The goal is to explore ways to go beyond simply making a likeness of the subject. Your paintings will contrast areas of suggestion with areas of contrast and detail to make them more engaging and give them more impact. You’ll work hard, but the atmosphere will be casual and a lot of fun! John provides painting subjects and does at least two demonstration paintings each day, then assists individual students with their work. He will explain all the essential materials and will discuss techniques and approaches to get maximum impact from a simple collection of tools and equipment.

Lovett 3John comes to ArtCenter Manatee all the way from Australia! He has been painting professionally for over 40 years. His work possesses an emotive power and vitality that is enhanced by his use of light, color and a strong sense of design. John’s passion for his work and his open, very informative approach to teaching make him a much sought after instructor. John’s knowledge and enthusiasm will inspire you to produce better paintings in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

During a 4-week session, the instructor will demonstrate and teach various techniques and approaches on the subject listed. In the first 2 classes, the instructor will hand out copies of the photo reference for the students to follow along during the painting process as well as note any teaching points in their sketchbooks. These painted samples will be done on quarter sheets. In the last 2 classes, the student will create their own artwork of the subject in any size of their choosing from their photo references and apply the techniques just learned. Class size is limited to 16 for more instructor feedback.

Landscape Impressions In Watercolor, Michael Holter

This workshop will focus on the use of watercolor to paint exciting impressionistic paintings. You paint from photographs and will explore the use of light and shadow to create interesting compositions and achieve dynamic results. We will examine the fundamentals of watercolor painting to assure that all students are familiar with the techniques. Daily discussions and application of the principles and elements of design will be woven into your painting experience. Each day you will engage in exercises that will solidify the content that you are working on and spend time viewing other artist’s work. We will discuss the methods and the impact that these artists achieve using their techniques. HOLTER Violets Ridge 2Michael will demonstrate his approach to creating  landscapes and show you several high-speed video demonstrations. You will have ample time to successfully complete your own paintings. Michael welcomes novice and advanced students and tailors the experience to individual needs.
