Fresh & Exciting Watercolors Workshop with John Lovett

In this 2019 watercolor and mixed media art workshop with John Lovett, you’ll explore not only traditional watercolor techniques but also a combination of different methods and materials including ink, gesso, gouache, acrylic and charcoal to free up your work and squeeze more out of your subject. The goal is to explore ways to go beyond simply making a likeness of the subject. Your paintings will contrast areas of suggestion with areas of contrast and detail to make them more engaging and give them more impact. You’ll work hard, but the atmosphere will be casual and a lot of fun! John provides painting subjects and does at least two demonstration paintings each day, then assists individual students with their work. He will explain all the essential materials and will discuss techniques and approaches to get maximum impact from a simple collection of tools and equipment.

Lovett 3John comes to ArtCenter Manatee all the way from Australia! He has been painting professionally for over 40 years. His work possesses an emotive power and vitality that is enhanced by his use of light, color and a strong sense of design. John’s passion for his work and his open, very informative approach to teaching make him a much sought after instructor. John’s knowledge and enthusiasm will inspire you to produce better paintings in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Watercolor Portraits-The Basics Workshop with Joanna Coke

Thursday-Saturday or Friday-Sunday 9:30-3:30

This 3-day workshop will focus on a straight-on view of the face to help students understand the many levels of creating a portrait such as drawing, mixing skin and hair colors, and shadowing. On the 1st day you will draw the basic relationships of the facial features and how they relate proportionally to each other and then paint sections from the handouts provided focusing on values. On the 2nd day, you will use your photo reference of the person you wish to paint and learn how to “see” the small changes of alignment. You will then paint sections from your photo reference to learn how to mix skin and hair colors. On the final day, you will apply all that you’ve learned and paint a full portrait from your photo reference. Light table will be available for tracing. Coffee, tea, and water with snacks will be provided for morning and afternoon breaks.

Mastering Wet Into Wet Workshop with Kathleen Giles

In this exciting and challenging workshop you will learn to paint into wet washes building both color saturation and value. Kathleen will share her techniques for “damp brush” giving students a new confidence over the medium. We will study hard and soft edges that are present in every subject matter. From composition, to using the computer to plan a strong value pattern, all aspects of the painting process will be discussed and demonstrated.  A strong emphasis will be made on the properties of different colors, staining versus opaque. Students will use compliments for vibrancy and to mix neutral colors in order to create dramatic paintings. All photo references will be provided prior to the workshop along with an e-mail from Kathleen with tips for drawing, etc. We will paint a flower, and a close-up cropped picture of a woman’s shoulder and hand. Some previous experience to advance.
