Painting With A Loose Brush

Lucy Barber B-A
Tuesdays 1:00-4:00

This exciting 5-week class is about seeing color, experimenting with paint application, building composition, and breathing life into a painting. Carefully observing color in still life set-ups, students place “spots” of color in loose patches of paint. Techniques for mapping out a composition with shapes will aid when starting to “draw” with paint. Through frequent one-on-one demonstrations, discussion, and in-studio practice, students will experience a sense of creative play, will be inventive, and have fun in the process. You will see progress in your work! Beginning and experienced painters are welcome; a working knowledge of drawing, color, and oil paints is helpful. Acrylics are welcome too.

Painting The Middle Ground

Kerry Didday I
Tuesdays 9:30 – 12:00

One way to paint is to plan everything in advance, often starting with sketches, models or photographs, then following them fairly strictly. This works best if you have a specific idea of how you want the finished painting to look. Another way to paint
is to decide it isn’t always necessary, desirable, or even possible to be in control of the painting process. Add an element to a canvas then let the painting evolve as you move around, introduce new elements, veil some, remove others and continue to
respond until the painting is complete. We will work in the middle ground, utilizing both approaches finding that place somewhere in the middle.

Expressive Painting From Photographs

James Griffin  B-A
Thursdays 2:30-5:00

Painting from photographs can be very exciting. The photograph can often take over, pushing out the artist’s sense of expression. For more than four decades I have worked from photos and have learned ways to get control over them, to
see into the photo and paint expressively from it. In this class you will learn how to scale up a photo and paint directly from it. No projectors or other gadgets are needed. When you learn to not be intimidated by the photographic image, beautiful
paintings can emerge!

Passionate Pastel Workshop

Joanna Karpay B-I
Friday or Thursday 9:00- 4:00

Learn to use vivid color and bold marks to create expressive, colorful paintings. Pastels are a vibrant and beautiful medium that can be used in bold strokes of pure color pigment to achieve exciting results. Various forms of dry pastels, papers and techniques will be discussed in this one-day workshop. You will benefit from a pastel demonstration using an underpainting technique. The use of an underpainting is taught to show how it enhances the final outcome of the work.

Then you will go on your own adventure creating a pastel painting working from your own photo reference. By choosing a photo of a place you’ve been there is a deeper connection and results in a more successful painting! Individual attention is given throughout the class. Known for her loose and expressive style, Joanna will help you loosen up to become a more “painterly” painter.
