Jewelry Foundation For Beginners

During this class you will learn to identify and use basic jewelry tools and supplies. We will make rings, pendants, bracelets and earrings while learning the language of jewelry and its’ components. Proper use of tools and safety will be discussed while learning to use hand tools such as the jewelers saw, files & a sanding stick. Soldering, stone setting and polishing will be covered. Please print your supply list. Materials will be purchased at the beginning of each class. Please bring a notebook and wear closed toe shoes to each class.

Intermediate Jewelry Techniques

Wire Wrapped Jewelry

Students will create seven pieces of jewelry with just a coil of precious metal wire (Sterling Silver) and three types of pliers and a cutter. An overview of wire and the creation of simple jewelry findings will prepare the student for wire wrap projects (earrings, ring, bracelet, 4 pendants) in netting, framing, and wire sculpture, all without solder or torches. Silver wire fee payable to instructor: $45; Pliers available from instructor: $30.

Basic Hydraulic Press

Stone Setting

Learn to set cabochon stones with thick gauge metal by hammer setting and tab setting. Gain the knowledge and techniques needed to make professional settings. From small to large shapes, set stones with confidence. Working with stones of different shapes and sizes, students will explore prongs, and different types of bezel settings. Oops! The stone doesn’t fit? Learn to alter the shape of your stone to make it fit.

Mixed Metals

Texturing Metal

Learn to create a variety of dynamic textures to incorporate into your jewelry design. You will explore the never-ending possibilities of surface embellishments. Create your own one-of-a kind texture plates to be used over and over with mixed metals. We will explore organic and contemporary textures using hammers, hand tools, rolling mill impressions, and flex shaft accessories. Heat-generated textures such as reticulation and methods of fusing will also be covered. Students will make a collection of textured metal sheets to be used in the design and creation of jewelry. Soldering tips and techniques will be reviewed as we begin fabricating.

Hammer Time!

Small scale forging for jewelers. Move metal with grace. Learn how to forge and taper wires to create pendants. Students are encouraged to bring their own collection of hammers. Gain knowledge of what hammer to use when. Styles of hammers will be discussed. Fabrication and rolling mill techniques will be covered. Cabochon stones will be incorporated into the designs, so please bring what you have.

Salt Water Etching

Explore the benefits salt water etching has to offer by using copper, brass and nickel. This non-toxic etching technique is safe and simple. In this workshop you will create texture plates to be used in the rolling mill as well as finished pieces of jewelry. We will explore different patterns, textures and resists. You will also learn how to set up your own portable etching bath to be used at home. Supply fee of $15-$20 to be paid to instructor.
