Opening Reception Thursday, May 8th, 5-7pm

Watch art come alive through the eyes of local school children this May when ArtCenter Manatee displays the work of over 200 students from 16 Manatee County elementary schools in three galleries.

Think art is just for fun? Art is fun but it’s also important in development: it enhances our lives and teaches our children valuable skills in interaction, self-expression, communication and problem solving. Have you ever seen a child create an alien monster from clay and paint, figuring out where the different, and alien, parts go, how they connect, what colors they will be? Or the joy they express when their work is not only completed but displayed for others to see? The process of creation, planning, sharing ideas, and then putting it all together are processes they will use throughout their lives.

Art matters the same way math and science matter. With many art programs being reduced or eliminated in our schools, ArtCenter Manatee has made a commitment to art and children by filling the gap and adding enrichment through kids art programs.

Thanks to the dedication of school art teachers and a grant from the Mary E. Parker Foundation, ArtCenter Manatee is taking the art education program a step further by providing a new and meaningful experience in exhibiting, and offering for sale, the work of local students, many of whom have never stepped into a gallery before, let alone exhibited art work for public viewing.

Juror’s Statement

The works of art presented in this exhibit are truly outstanding. Choosing only one 1st place, only one 2nd place, only one 3rd place with only 3 honorable mentions in each category was a real challenge.

The winners were selected based on the use of design, composition and the application of color. Originality was a major factor as well as control of the medium.

Congratulations to all of the students whose art work is on display. Special congratulations to the wonderfully creative teachers who inspire and guide them.

Thank you Art Center Manatee for hosting this exhibit and thank you for introducing these young artists to the real world of exhibitions.
