2009-2010 EXHIBITION SCHEDULE
ArtCenter Manatee is Manatee County's premiere visual arts center featuring the artwork of many talented
local, state and national
artists. Exhibitions change monthly in the three large galleries and the public is always welcome
to the opening receptions to
preview the artwork and meet the artists.
September 1 - October 9
Opening Reception: September 4, 2009 5-7pm
In Your Face - Alain Huin
As an Industrial designer and artist, Alain Huin has spent a lifetime creating and exploring new ways
of seeing the obvious. He uses a minimalist’s approach to convey his ideas with bold graphic imagery.
"This series of work represents 'visually' my thoughts and observations.
I love to explore connections between characters. They may be complex or simple, whimsical or 'in your
face' confrontational. I try to reduce the image to a minimum and still convey an idea or emotion and
leave the viewer with the freedom of their own interpretation and conclusions."
Out of Bounds - Tyrell Waiters
Young & successful artist Tyrell Waiters shares some recent work;
paintings straight from an artist’s soul, ranging from vibrant still-lifes to rich portraiture.
"I've always felt my painting is what kept me out of trouble. I've put my art before anything else. The
streets will get you shot, with sports there is no guarantee, and women will put you in bad
predicaments. My art has grounded me, helped me mature and given me a focus throughout my life.
My paintings tend to evolve through the brush. I don't sketch first. I lay down color and the rest just
comes after that. Color soothes me. I've used one brush, the same brush, in all of my paintings. The
strokes I make depend on how I'm feeling at the moment. I tend to use looser strokes when I'm calm, and
feel happy, and if the painting is giving me what I want."

I Am Home - Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness
A art initiative of the Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness presents artwork by local homeless
artists. These works are filled with color and emotion, illustrating the souls of these artists living
on the streets.

On and Off the Wall - An open, juried, all media exhibition
Max Muller, Juror
It was my distinct pleasure to judge this show and to return to the ArtCenter. I was very impressed by the diversity and volume of the works submitted for judging. As with any show that I have judged, it is always a very difficult task to exclude some works from the exhibition. I would like to have accepted every work submitted but due to available space that is not possible. The quality of the works submitted for this show made that task even more difficult.
I always strive to have a well rounded exhibition, offering “something for every viewer”, it also makes for a more interesting artistic presentation. I commend ArtCenter Manatee for offering the very attractive and professional looking environment in which to show the art.
Those of you whose work was not selected, I thank you for your efforts and artistic commitment and keep trying, art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. During these troubling and uncertain times, art offers an enjoyable and comforting retreat for the soul. Thank you all for creating that environment and supporting the arts. - Max Muller

Wild About Color Reid-Hodges Gallery
Marge Bennett & Carolyn Ritter
The two local artists were first drawn to each other’s work by their use of vibrant colors.
Their work often shares a whimsical attitude, and the quality of the painted surface shows a love
for the painting process.
ArtCenter Manatee Student Exhibition Searle Gallery
An exhibit showcasing the talent and creativity of ArtCenter Manatee students.
3 Dimensions, 3 Ways
Carol Ferony - Pastels
Art is personal in the sense that it is a concept with a voice. This is true for both the artist and the viewer, however diverse the interpretation. The association of structural elements, rhythm, balance and the energy they create are what I consider to be the most important aspects of my work. Many of my interpretations of everyday life scenarios have been experienced while others are imagined…. but within the creative process all are self portraits.
Bill Kidd - Clay Sculpture
The works on display are from a recent series of works titled “Fertile Ground”. This work began about two years ago when I began to alter thrown forms and close them with stem like additions. These early pieces in this series were simple gourd-like forms. Using nature as inspiration, the forms have developed into more complex sculptures with the additions of many hand built and thrown parts.
Pat Underwood - Clay Figures
Pat’s body of work includes decorative tiles, mosaic murals, garden art, art dolls, and sculpture as well as functional pieces. As well as being an exhibiting artist, her work can be found in private collections throughout the country.

The original juried exhibition, hung in March 2009 at the Salmagundi Club in NYC contained over 100 entries, 40 of which have been chosen for the traveling show with over half having won awards.
As an accompaniment, the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society will present works by their members in the Searle and Reid Hodges Galleries. FSWS is comprised of artists from 7 gulf coast counties representing some of the best watercolor talent in the south.
