A GATHERING of IMAGINARY FRIENDS
Wood sculptures and paintings by Candace Knapp
Through laminating and carving wood, I make sculptures that populate the ceiling, stand on the floor or hang on a wall and sometimes, rarely, recline on a pedestal. These are inhabitants of my imagination, made real. They are gentle creatures, for the most part, and I think of them as my imaginary friends. I have started painting too, and the paintings seem to be windows on the world where the sculptures originate. Over the last few years I have had several installations in museums. Each time there are some new characters and the way they are arranged enhances their meaning. They bounce off one another like characters in a play.

Louise,Renaldo,Leilah, OscarIn this exhibition at ArtCenter Manatee I have added something new, their voices. I have always thought these characters had a message for me and have begun to write poems for many of them. These are available in a small book that accompanies the exhibition.
