ArtCenter Manatee is hosting a Closing Reception & Party for the KidsArt Summer Camp Program on Friday, August 5th, 5-7pm. We’ll begin displaying the art on July 27th in all three galleries at the ArtCenter.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to view the multifaceted work created by our young artists, ages four to fifteen. Colorful, imaginative, and sometimes just plain joyful. You’ll see paintings, pottery, Paper Mache, photography, mosaics, jewelry and more, including painted chairs. The exhibit ends on August 5th with the closing reception.

Students from every class are represented. Teachers and students work together to select a piece for the exhibit. There will be kid-friendly snacks donated by our community partners including Culvers, Dominos and Mixon Fruit Farms. We’ll also have activities at the reception.

Join us for this delightful evening and meet our talented young artists! The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

About ArtCenter Manatee’s KidsArt Programs

Our KidsArt Programs are designed to engage students and allow them to explore and express their creativity while they have fun. After School programs give them the chance to continue their visual arts education when the summer programs end. A visual arts education promotes creative thinking and problem-solving skills, improves academic performance, especially in math and reading, encourages students to see the world from multiple perspectives and helps students process difficult emotions.

A GATHERING of IMAGINARY FRIENDS
Wood sculptures and paintings by Candace Knapp
Through laminating and carving wood, I make sculptures that populate the ceiling, stand on the floor or hang on a wall and sometimes, rarely, recline on a pedestal. These are inhabitants of my imagination, made real. They are gentle creatures, for the most part, and I think of them as my imaginary friends. I have started painting too, and the paintings seem to be windows on the world where the sculptures originate. Over the last few years I have had several installations in museums. Each time there are some new characters and the way they are arranged enhances their meaning. They bounce off one another like characters in a play.

Louise,Renaldo,Leilah, OscarIn this exhibition at ArtCenter Manatee I have added something new, their voices. I have always thought these characters had a message for me and have begun to write poems for many of them. These are available in a small book that accompanies the exhibition.
